In a world of abundance it is quite questionable, and darn near unthinkable to try to comprehend how any one person could “go without,” while so many others live in abundance. Abundance: “an ample quantity; relative degree of plentifulness.” While many individuals depend on their next paychecks to buy groceries for the following week, or must choose the off-brand products because they cannot afford higher quality goods, food or services, the one thing that many of us are afforded is a choice. We are afforded the opportunity to live with a “relative degree of plentifulness” if we choose to live with a lower degree of quality. Unfortunately, the same reality does not exist for many other members of this global community.
The reality for many of the students and families in Kenya is that the concept of abundance is lost on them. Even the idea of sufficiency is one that exists as a dream hoped for, rather than a realistic goal aspired towards. In schools where 3-5 children share one book, children use pencils shorter than the length of their finger (if they have a pencil of their own at all), tattered uniforms riddled with holes are worn day in and day out by the students, many of whom walk 2-3 hours to school each way with holes in their shoes or no shoes at all, the true reality is one of absence rather than abundance. Doing without is substituted for doing with less. Making it out or making a change is the dream. Just making it is the reality.
However, dreams can and do come true. "True Start Athletics presents: Care for Kenya" is a program established and operated by True Start Athletics, Inc to provide students and families in distinct areas of Kenya with the tools and services that they need in order to be educationally successful, and to enhance students' academic/educational experiences through multiple modalities. True Start Athletics is currently working with 6 schools in Kenya to provide students and families determined to be in the highest of need with educational supplies, uniforms, shoes, funding for lunch and a host of other goods and services.
Individual members of True Start Athletics fund their own travel to Kenya each year to personally deliver goods and supplies, purchase new uniforms and shoes, as well as to engage with the students and expose them to new experiences. Newly launched initiatives of “The Arts” as well as “Athletics” seek to provide students with a more robust and comprehensive educational experience by providing schools with art and athletic supplies, as well provide the students with instruction and dynamic exposure to the use of their new supplies.
Many individuals ask themselves (and us) “why should I give to children abroad when there are children here that need help as well?” There are many answers to that question. The answers that seem to resound the most are because you can and because it truly will make a difference that you personally will be able to see. There is no such thing as giving too little, as any amount donated goes directly to the needs of the students. We encourage any donor who would find themselves curious to personally contact a team member and we will gladly provide you with a copy of the projected financial breakdown, as well as an itemized spending sheet after the trip. Should you desire a more personal connection, individuals providing donations of $100 or more will receive a picture of a student in Kenya with a “thank you” sign personally addressed to that donor.
You CAN make a difference. You CAN change the course of the life of one, or even many students. You WILL see the effects of your giving. We may not be able to change the world, but we can change the world for some.
