“No Bad Days.”
What started in 2005 as an adopted theme in the initial stages of the Schys’ marriage turned into a motto that would play a critical role in the life of Tom Schy, especially during his courageous battle against prostate cancer. Despite the ups and downs of his journey, Tom always found the good in every person, thing and situation. Through his continuous courage, optimism and positivity, Tom ensured that no day of his life would go wasted. He had “no bad days.”
Thomas Carl Schy (October 29, 1951 - August 5, 2015) was a loving husband, a compassionate father, an enthusiastic educator, and devoted Christian. He was the life of the party. He was an avid philanthropist. He was the teacher who wanted to make a difference. Between his smiles, his words, his hugs, and his contagious laughter, Tom had a way of making us all feel special.
Tom’s journey with cancer began in January 2009. After what seemed to be a routine checkup, Tom was advised for further evaluation, as a lump was detected. Upon his diagnosis with advanced metastatic prostate cancer, Tom was given a maximum of two years to live. At this point, Tom and Kathy had been married for three years. The news came as a shock to the entire family, but Tom remained determined to beat his cancer. He battled for six years, far beyond what was expected of him. Tom wouldn’t lose hope…and he wouldn’t have bad days.
Throughout his life, Tom continued to teach, inspire and grow. He devoted himself to his family and faith. He committed countless hours towards soccer practices and lesson plans. He allocated necessary time for travel and fun with his wife. In general, Tom was dedicated to each and every person in his life, which speaks significantly to his selfless character. He always lifted us up and tried to highlight our strengths, rather than underscore our shortcomings. That is an extraordinary gift, especially as a father, coach and educator. Tom had a way of motivating us all, and that impact will live on in our hearts.
On August 5, 2015, Tom passed away and entered the gates of Heaven. Our hearts are broken. But Tom ensured that he would make the most of every moment…every day would be good. While Tom is no longer here with us on Earth, his joy and enthusiasm will forever bless us all. We will continue to live with “No Bad Days” to ensure that we embody Tom’s teachings and carry them with us in all that we do.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Kathy (Woesner) Schy, children, Becky Ospina (Spouse, Moises Ospina) and Carl T. Schy (Spouse, Michelle Schy), step-children, Kelly Pruner (Spouse, Aaron Pruner), Kevin Smith (Spouse, Melissa Smith), father, Carl Schy, sister, Cathy Babiak (Spouse, Tony Babiak), and grandchildren, Amanda Schy, Katie Schy, Isabella Ospina, Lucas Ospina, and Anthony Ospina. Also left behind is Tom’s save haven – the beach house in Mexico. The Schys sought refuge in this home to recharge and remind themselves of their motto.
