OPERATION BACKPACK 2015 Thousands of children live with their families in the New York City homeless shelter system and many of them return to school each year without the school supplies they need. From day one, they look and feel different from their classmates. In fact, one of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on a child’s education. Operation Backpack helps close this gap, providing new, filled backpacks to students who are homeless. The demand is greater than ever; this year’s goal is 20,000 backpacks! Volunteers of America hopes to provide a backpack to every child in a shelter who needs one, but will need our help to do so.
