However Botswana is among the countries that are witnessing declines on new infections, however the country still dealing with high HIV prevalence, particularly among young women of ages 15 – 24 years (10.7%) as compared to their male counterparts (4.8%). The declines have also been witnessed among pregnant women 15 – 19, from a high prevalence of 16% in 1992 to a low of 10% in 2011. However prevalence is still very much high among older age groups, with young women of ages 25- 29 years have prevalence of 32% in 2011 . Knowledge levels on HIV transmission remains low, with only 43% with comprehensive knowledge on HIV . What is comforting is that knowledge on contraceptives among adolescents has increased from 56.5%in 2001 to 72% in 2010. However, only 45% know at least 3 of the contraceptives . All this has an impact on whether young people are able to use available methods to avoid unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions and reduce maternal deaths due to pregnancy related complications. The country continues to grapple with other kinds of STIs. The drivers of STIs including HIV among young people include intergenerational sex, multiple and concurrent sexual partners, gender-based violence, transactional sex/sex work, limited use of condoms and other contraceptives as well as low male circumcision.
