My name is Lupe, I not only work in the foster care field, I was raised in it for the majority of my upbringing and at the age of 32 was adopted. I have volunteered for FCAA since 2007 and have seen the power that "connecting" youth with other older networks of support who come from the same upbringing they did adds so much joy to their lives and gives them hope for their future. I have also witnessed the "transforming" that the occurs when those raised in foster care and those that work or volunteer for the foster care and child welfare community it's so powerful and even changes not only lives but laws and policies that provide better services for youth and adult from foster care. Join me in sharing more about the joys of foster care!
Walk A Mile In My Shoes is a free event created to bring greater awareness to the needs of Oklahoma's foster children, and the need for more foster families, adoptive families, and volunteers in the community. Participants will learn about the many ways they can help by PRAYING, VOLUNTEERING, FOSTERING, and ADOPTING. Participants are encouraged to bring a suitcase to carry during the Walk, symbolic of the many moves and disruptions that children in foster care often experience. New/gently used suitcases can be donated after the Walk. New shoes of all sizes for children ages 0-18 may also be donated at the Walk. Participation is free, but registration is required.
