BENEFITING: Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.
Planned Parenthood is under financial attack. On Thursday, February 16, 2017, the House took steps to deny state and federal funding for Planned Parenthood and any other health care provider that performs abortions.
“Defunding” Planned Parenthood really means hurting patients who rely on public health care programs. 2.5 million people use PP’s services every single year. That includes access to sex education, birth control, prenatal care, STD testing, cervical cancer screenings, and so much more. Where will they go if PP isn’t around to help them? 21% of American counties have no safety-net family planning alternative should their local PP health center close.
We at Tumblr believe in Planned Parenthood. We believe the accessibility of their services are vital to the health and well-being of everyone. We believe we must fight back against any regulations that threaten the financial security of this wonderful organization.
Planned Parenthood has been active on Tumblr since April 2012. The Tumblr community, always on the forefront of human rights and social justice, immediately welcomed their positive, educational, and funny posts. We’ve worked closely together on different activations for years now. In addition to his work here at Tumblr, our CEO, David Karp, currently serves as a board member of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
We hope you can help out anyway you can. Donate now, voice your support, show people that you care, plan an event in your local area, or call your elected officials. Let’s keep each other educated and accountable. We need that more than ever.
If you’re attending SXSW this year and are curious about hearing more from the people who do this every day, check out the “Activism, Allyship and Where We Go from Here” panel with Karp and the President of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards. It’s being held March 10, 5—6pm at the Austin Convention Center.
