The Turimiquire Foundation is a grassroots foundation, established in 1995, that delivers family planning and educational services to low-income girls and women in rural Venezuela. To date, we have helped more than 32,000 women proactively plan the size of their families. Our reproductive health education workshops have reached an additional 47,000 adolescents and young women students, following up with access to medical attention and contraception when desired.
Once women and their families gain control of their fertility, they seek the best possible future for their children through education. We support rural pre-, primary and secondary schools, and offer scholarships for girls to attend high school and go to college. More than 400 scholarship students have attended high school and 20 of those graduates are now in college. These families are transitioning from illiteracy to college in one generation!
Our family planning and education services are demand-driven via word of mouth by thousands of rural, low-income girls and women, generating a demand that far exceeds our present service capacity. The demand is there. The delivery systems are in place. We just need the funding. With more funding, we will be able to deliver more of our services to more women and girls in need.
All Officers and Board Members donate their services - none receive compensation of any kind. On average, more than 93% of our budget (95% in 2013) goes directly into service delivery, with the balance going to administration, infrastructure, and fund raising.
