BENEFITING: Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia
I'm turning 70 in a few weeks and I am, quite frankly, terrified. Who wants to be 70? I want to be 40, maybe 45, even 50. I have a long list of things I want to accomplish, and time is not on my side. Pep talks from friends and family aren’t working (“It’s better than the alternative,” “70 is the new 40,” “But you look great!”). Contemplating my predicament, I realized that what I need to do is turn this negative into a positive. So I'm celebrating my birthday by raising money for my favorite charity: Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia.
Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia--the concept is simple; the payoff is great. Volunteers from the community donate their time to help paid professionals build houses for families who could not afford to be homeowners without this program. The homeowners themselves work 350 hours as a downpayment for the house. Then they receive a 30-year 0% mortgage from Habitat. Most are paying less in monthly mortgage payements than they were paying for rent. Everybody--the famiies, the neighborhoods, and especially the city of Philadelphia--wins!
When I reach my goal my companion Fergus and I will run up the Rocky steps (what else? I live in Fairmount!), do the Rocky pose, and send everyone who donated to my campaign a photo.
