BENEFITING: ECOLOGY PROJECT INTERNATIONAL
As our world becomes a more global society, it is important for teachers to understand this context. In addition, many of Kentucky’s teachers have been accustomed to the insular environment of the Appalachian culture. This course is designed for an international location so that our teachers can broaden their perspectives and experience different cultures to relay those experiences to their students. There are many parallels between Mexico and Appalachian Kentucky including its rural nature, its economic dependence on natural resources and the importance of family values. An experience outside of their comfort zone will help teachers appreciate the possible impact of service learning on their students. The follow-up workshop will provide teachers with a research based model to develop service learning experiences with their students.
