I'm doing the Alcatraz swim this September to fulfill a personal goal and raise money for my high school, Bellarmine College Preparatory (BCP), an all-boys, Jesuit high school in San Jose, California.

Bellarmine was a significant force in my life, playing a key role in shaping my conception of manhood; this realization continues to be magnified by the passage of time. My experience there instilled in me a desire to attempt to become, in the words of the school motto, a "man for others." This concept entails young men harnessing their intellectual, physical, and other human capabilities to engage in the service of others, whether it be their family, the poor, or the sick.

I have been a financial supporter of the school's Diversity Outreach Program, which recruits some of San Jose's finest young men from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. These promising individuals, all of whom would be the first person in their families to attend college, receive holistic, committed support during their time at BCP and beyond.

The support is not limited to tuition assistance and academic/college prep guidance at the oldest high school in California. Bellarmine, in its typical fashion, provides a full-service program to these young men, going well beyond what might be expected even from a top tier outreach program.

As a proud alumnus of Bellarmine, even I was surprised by the lengths the school goes to make sure these young men are equipped to succeed. Consistent with Bellarmine's mission of educating and nurting the whole person, the spirit / practice of the program involves doing whatever it takes to support the young men. Personal counseling and supporting the students' families through various trials and tribulations are integral components of the phenomenal success rates of the program.

A total of 90 students have been served from 2006 to date. Going forward, the average annual intake of students will be 12-15. There is virtually a 100% retention rate for the students while at BCP, and nearly every single student has gone to a four-year college.

The interlocking webs of support that define Bellarmine had a very powerful impact on my life and colored my thinking about the man I hope to become. I would love to help future generations of young men from less privileged backgrounds experience what I was lucky to enjoy.
