Super Typhoon Haiyan, was one of the strongest storms recorded on the planet -- smashed into the Philippines on November 8th. As the storm plowed across the cluster of islands in the heart of the country, major casualties and catastrophic loss occurred. Over 5,200 people lost their lives, and the survivors are without basic neccesseties of survival, water, food, shelter, clothing, medicine, and medical facilities.
The storm brought tremendously powerful winds roaring ashore as it made landfall in the province of Eastern Visayas. There was widespread devastation from the storm surge in Tacloban City, with many buildings being destroyed, trees knocked over or broken, and cars piled up. The low-lying areas on the eastern side of Tacloban city were hardest hit, with some areas completely washed away.
As a person of filippino heritage, my fellow Theta Xi Alumni and I are teaming up to raise funds to help bring much needed assistance to the people who lost everything.
