BENEFITING: Children's Hospital Los Angeles
Nancy Chang wrote -Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a growing problem among children and adolescents in the US and at CHLA. In the last 2 decades we have seen an unprecedented surge in number of newly diagnosed youth and more troubling is the difficulty we encounter in managing these children. What used to be an older adult medical problem, now is a very serious problem for adolescents especially within the minority populations. T2DM affects more Latinos, African American, Asians and Native Americans. Diabetes management during adolescence is challenging due to many physical, psychological and cognitive changes, and it has been reported that 50% of adolescents with chronic diseases do not comply with care recommendations. In order to avoid diabetes related complications and lifelong consequences to the health of these individuals, it is necessary to address the needs and to understand how to help these patients to overcome the barriers to treat their disease. Our fundraiser will help the Diabetes and Obesity program develop innovative ways to help these children take better care of their diabetes and avoid becoming blind or going into dialysis at a very young age. Please support our cause and help us take care of children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes.
