The UA Maker Academy Summer of Fun(ds)
We're building a makerspace this summer. We want it to be the best public school makerspace in the country. That's where you come in.
Launched in 2014, the Urban Assembly Maker Academy (UA Maker) is an unscreened NYC public Career & Technical Education (CTE) high school with a curricular focus on design thinking and growth mindset, and hands-on career training in interaction design, physical computing, and digital media. We've teamed up with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) to build a state-of-the-art makerspace on our campus in lower Manhattan this summer. There are some pretty sweet makerspaces out there... mostly in private schools and colleges. Our goal is to build the best equipped and most dynamic urban public school makerspace in the nation. It will serve as the hub of cross-disciplinary, project-based learning in our school, serving all classes as well as our after-school program, and even providing a resource to the wider community.
WHAT WILL YOUR DONATION PAY FOR?
The DOE is undertaking a major capital project to construct the space, but it's our job to stock it (this includes technology like 3D printers and laser cutters as well as project consumables) and staff it (with a qualified Lab Specialist who can keep it running and co-plan curriculum with teachers). To do so, Friends of UA Maker, a ragtag band of professionals and dreamers who are ridiculously excited about this school, are aggressively pursuing a variety of new, sustainable funding streams. But we can't do it without the help of you, UA Maker's dearest friends and partners.
SO NOW WHAT?
The UA Maker Summer of Fun(ds) aims to raise $10,000 in July and $10,000 in August, which will not fully cover our anticipated costs, but will get us quite far and set off a stupendous chain reaction of giving. That is, it will motivate other funders, spark new campaigns, and inspire confidence in future backers by demonstrating what a strong, diverse support community exists not just for UA Maker but for maker education, which is here to stay.
WHO IS THE URBAN ASSEMBLY?
You may notice that "Urban Assembly, Inc" is the named charity. They are UA Maker's fiscal sponsor and founding partner. We're grateful to the UA for making this campaign possible!
