Public Interest Law Council's Alternative Spring Break, 2015
Organized by: UGA Law, PILC, ASB
EVENT DATE Mar 09, 2015
In 2010 a Georgia Law student, Texys Morris, arranged for her and five other students to volunteer with Orleans Public Defenders (OPD) in New Orleans. The following year PILC was established. Although we have continued the New Orleans and OPD tradition, the trip has grown. Last year 25 students volunteered at 5 different offices - OPD, Southeastern La Legal Services, Juvenile Justice Project, La Center for Children's Rights, and Innocence Project New Orleans.
Each year we try to raise enough funds to remove the financial disincentive many law students face, and thus increase the number of participants. The goal is to maximize student exposure to public interest and probono opportunity on top of increasing the gross number of hours we can provide to overburdened offices serving underprivileged and vulnerable populations.
