BENEFITING: The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, Inc.
ORGANIZER: The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Throughout my breast cancer treatment I was so blessed to have the support of friends and family every step of the way. I was lucky to have friends and family attend appointments with me, provide home cooked meals, and send encouraging cards/texts – I certainly never felt alone as I navigated each part of the process.
Running has been a sense of therapy for me (long before cancer) and I have run a marathon each fall for the last four years. Post treatment last year, I wanted to continue this tradition and trained for my fourth marathon. It was daunting to run again post treatment – it felt like my body and physical capacity was ruined by treatment. Again, with the cheering of family and friends – I was able to complete the marathon last fall. It was certainly the hardest race yet, but in the same breath, it was the most rewarding.
When looking ahead for a marathon this fall, I found the Ulman Cancer Fund that supports runners in the NYC marathon. After reading their mission (see below), it really spoke to me having been a young adult who underwent treatment. I understand the power of support through treatment and want to help patients who don’t have the same support as they navigate cancer. Therefore, I have chosen to join the Ulman Cancer Fund team to run the NYC marathon. With this decision, I have committed to raise $3,000 to help support the incredible programs that the charity provides to cancer patients.
Thank you to each of you for your support throughout my treatment, please consider supporting me as I take on another marathon and raise money for an incredible charity.
Ulman Cancer Fund Mission:
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide multiple support services and resources for the young adult cancer community, including:
Cancer to 5K - a free, progressive, 12-week run/walk program designed to reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity. The Team Fight New York City Marathon Team directly funds this life-changing program for survivors living in New York City and across the United States!
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at five major cancer centers and remotely via email and phone) that ensures no young adult faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support and resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
Thank you for all your time and effort to help make these programs and our mission possible!
Cancer changes lives…so do WE!
