Ulster County SPCA Expansion

THE STORY:

In an effort to house more stray and abandoned dogs in the Ulster County region, we are in the process of fundraising for an Ulster County SPCA Expansion. Born and raised in Woodstock, NY I came to the UCSPCA to get our community more involved with our shelter.

Some background:
•The Ulster County SPCA does not receive any government funding, nor any from the ASPCA. We rely solely on donations from the community and our supporters.
•Dogs come to us through multiple avenues:
•Strays and homeless dogs.
•Surrenders, either for financial or health reasons or other.
•Humane Law Cases, in which an animal is neglected or abused and is seized from an owner.
•We are the only Humane Law agency in Ulster County, a territory roughly the size of Rhode Island.

Ulster County SPCA Expansion:
• In an effort to house more stray and abandoned dogs in the Ulster County region, we are aiming to add 25 dog kennels.
• We currently house around 40 dogs and 100 cats.
• This addition would allow us to increase dog adoptions by approximately 30-percent. Over the past 3 years we have averaged 300 dog adoptions annually.
• Our current facility was constructed in 1992.
• We plan to fund this expansion through community donations and grants, as we fund out entire operation. We also hope to enlist the aid of local towns, some of which are already using and will be using our kennels in the future.
• We are still in the early stages of this expansion and do not yet have a timeline.
• A very rough estimate is that we will need somewhere in the area of $200-250K.
