It is estimated that around 1 million undocumented Haitian immigrants live and work in small communities known as bateyes scattered throughtout the sugar cane plantations of the Dominican Republic.
Unable to access consistent healthcare, and lacking in basic needs like food and running water, these Haitians live in constant fear of deportation, persecutaion, and starvation.
Working alongside the Hospital el Buen Samaritano, the UMass Medical School team aims to achieve two goals:
- provide immediate primary care and OB/Gyn surgical services to roughly 2000 patients living in bateyes around the city of La Romana
- work with local leaders in La Romana and other North American groups to develop a sustainable solution to provide consistent, high-quality healthcare to this population that otherwise would be without
