This is a fun and unique event to raise money for North Carolina Children's Hospital. Many of you know that I have now been working at NC Children's Hospital for almost 5 years. We take care of children and families from across the state however sick they are and regardless of their ability to pay. Participating in the race and raising money allows me to support the many great colleagues that I have here that work to provide the best care possible for our patients. The student organizers from NC State do a terrific job running this event. They have to coordinate with city leaders and local authorities and business for the 7000 runners. Last year they raised almost $200k, about $1.2 million over the last 6 years with a pledge to raise another $1 million. While the event has received some negative attention on social media due to the idea of eating a dozen doughnuts in one sitting, this draws attention away from the all the good things that these students are doing. This event is about one day in a year when a lot of people can come together to do a completely ridiculous and unhealthy activity all in the name of raising money for a good cause and to have some fun. In 2017, the event will take place on February 4th. I hope you will consider supporting NC Children's in whatever way you would like. You could donate on this team page or someone else's, you could sign up for the race on our "UNC Children's Tar Healers" team.
