THE STORY:

HELP! I am being held prisoner and must raise bail to be free to create again!

ARRESTED FOR: PLUCKING THE FEATHERS OF PEACOCKS AT THE ZOO

BAIL OFFERING:  A large, framed, one-of-a-kind feather collage featuring a detailed painting of an octapus spread out over seven feathers and valued at $325.

PRISONER PROFILE:  Elaine Maisel of Ridgeland is a mixed-media artist. You will regularly find parrot, peacock, guinea fowl, and turkey feathers in her work. She paints whisical miniatures on feathers that emphasize the shape, size and specific demands of the unusual medium. Most of the feathers that she uses for her work come from small family farms that raise free-range fowl specifically for feathers that the birds have naturally dropped.

ABOUT THE PIECE: "LUCKY OCTOPUS"

Acrylic hand-painted on seven parrot feathers sewn on canvas. "I painted this piece for a solo gallery showing at Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship (Fairhope, Alabama) last fall.   It purposely has seven parrot feathers in it for good luck. The combination of underwater creatures and feathers feels natural to me, as both birds and fish cut effortlessly through their environments defying the gravity that binds us to the ground. I feel restored whenever I return to the beaches of Gulf Coast, having much love for the creatures in the air, in the water, and the sand. I grew up in Northwestern Ohio, but because my mother was from Pensacola, we would travel there every summer to Oma and Opa. There has never been a year of my life that I have not touched the Gulf of Mexico. As a child it always healed my mosquito bites. As an adult I know that it heals my soul."

These parrot feathers are from the wings of a Blue-Gold Macaw that is owned by a woman in Clinton, MS who raises parrots. The feathers were collected by her when they naturally molted.
