Albinism is a genetically inherited disorder which results in a lack of pigmentation in the hair, skin and eyes of those affected. In almost all cases a significant visual impairment is also involved, with most persons with albinism being legally blind.

In North America and Europe it is estimated that 1 in 20,000 people have some form of albinism. In Tanzania however, it is 5 times as common with 1 in 4,000 people being affected.

Not only is living with albinism extremely challenging all over the world because of difficulties with protecting your skin and the fact that most albinos are visually impaired.

The horrifying truth is that albinism is linked to violent myths in Africa.

Here are some of the extremely dangerous and ignorant beliefs some people have about albinism:

- People with albinism are evil or are a curse from God and will bring bad luck on the household.
- People with albinism never die - they simply vanish
- People with albinism are born to black women who have slept with a white man
- Albinism is believed to be a contagious disease - as a result many employers avoid hiring persons with albinism due to fears that their customers and staff will "catch" the condition, or that food would be contaminated if touched by a person with albinism.

BUT HERE'S THE WORST PART:

In some areas in East Africa one believes that the body parts of people with albinism possess magical powers capable of bringing riches if used in potions produced by local witchdoctors. This has resulted in numerous brutal murders of albinos - and the violence continues everyday.

According to NOAH (The National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation), at least 44 people have been killed in Tanzania, and 14 deaths have been registered in Burundi. This is just since 2008.

My goal is to raise $10 in the memory of each of these people - so we're looking at $580. Funding ends DECEMBER 31 2010 - that's less than $4 a DAY!

Will you be the one who donates $4 today?

Will you help me? (And consider this: if we do well, we might raise $10 for each person whose death wasn't registered in the statistics.)
