Union Settlement Association is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, we have brought education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.
East Harlem is an area rich in culture and diverse in immigrant identity, but also one of the lowest-income communities in New York City. Together, our 400 employees and the 10,000 residents who participate in our programs each year work to make East Harlem a strong, supportive and proud community where dreams are born and achieved every day. We work side-by-side with community members to tackle the issues that are important to the vitality of the neighborhood, and to advocate with them on behalf of all East Harlem residents, and underserved communities across our city, state and nation.
We serve community members with a wide array of programs, including: Early Childhood Education (seven childcare/Head Start centers and a Family Childcare Network), Youth Programs (after-school and summer programs, Tech Lab, tutoring, sexual literacy, college readiness, dance, theater), Adult Education (Basic Education in Spanish and English, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Civics, GED preparation, citizenship, computer skills), Senior Services (four Senior Centers, Meals on Wheels, Transportation Program, Social Adult Day Program), Mental Health Counseling and HIV/AIDS Services (Manhattan HIV Care Network, HIV Counseling Program).
