THE STORY:

**Disclaimer: This message has been edited and updated.

Haiti has a unique, beautiful, and vibrant culture. However, due to the recent disasters:

  • 90% of southern Haiti is destroyed
  • Haiti is the poorest nation in the Americas
  • More than 800 people are dead
  • Cholera outbreak is affecting hundreds of people

Furthermore, Haiti faced the devastating Hurricanes Hanna, Gustav and Ike in 2008, plus a terrible 7.0 magnitude earthquake and cholera epidemic in 2010.

These are only the recent disasters.

I invite you to look at the full list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_natural_disasters_in_Haiti

Let's help Haiti together.

The purpose of United for Haiti is to collectively gather funds to provide to the people of Haiti. While we can do individual contributions, raising money together can allow us to have a greater effect.

For my fall break, I am going to an orphanage in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic with an organization calledhereforkids.org and students from the University of Notre Dame. I had every intention to go the Haiti since I was going to be in Hispaniola but the short duration of the trip will not allow me to do this.

The main reason that I am not going to Haiti is because my plan to go in person and bring supplies won't be as EFFECTIVE as donating money to the NGOs who are professionals and have experience. I tried signing up to volunteer but the process is too intricate.

I really do not like asking for money but it does not seem practical to bring donation goods into Haiti. Let's please be united in helping Haiti by giving out a collective donation.

From the research that I am doing, I am learning that they need money, over supplies. Since money is flexible, they can acquire whatever goods they need in that moment.

To prevent you from analysis paralysis, I am compiling a list of organizations that are impacting the lives of Haitians directly. Then, donors will choose where they want their money to. All donations will go under the name of United for Haiti, a campaign that is advocated by every single donor.

Therefore, my plan is:

  • Raise money from friends and family members and research on organizations that are helping with the Haiti cause
  • Provide money under the name of United for Haiti to the causes we collective believe are the best

You DO NOT have to donate to my cause to help Haiti. And Haiti is NOT the only place that is affected by Hurricane Matthew. However, the reason for "United for Haiti" is to collectively help, instead of making individual contributions since we can raise more funds together.

Here are some ways you can help Haiti in your own way:

This is what the Center for Social Concerns at ND provided:

Here are some other places to do research:

How can you trust me?

I will give updates as to the progress of this campaign to be transparent.

As I said previously, I am not going to Haiti so I am NOT going to vlog because it is insensitive.

I will be transparent on how much money we raised and how much is going to organizations, or purchase of goods.

To everyone who donate, I want to give back but I am still brainstorming on the best way to give back to the people who support this cause.
