I was nominated (although it's still a mystery who did the nominating) to attend the United State of Women Summit convened by the White House. It's right between two other trips, and it's only two weeks away. I have ZERO funds available to go because I've put them towards the Philadelphia Trans Health Conference and the WPATH Symposium.
I hate to ask for money. I really do. But when an opportunity arises, it's hard not to take a chance. So here's to taking chances.
The summit covers key Gender Equality issues and we know this White House views trans women and trans girls as women! To be recognized for "work to further gender equality" when that work is on behalf of the transgender community, including my own beautiful daughter, would have been inconceivable just a few years ago. But now, it's part of the conversation.
The summit will focus on 6 key areas:
- Economic Empowerment
- Health and Wellness
- Educational Opportunities
- Violence Against Women
- Entrepreneurship and Innovation
- Leadership and Civic Engagement
To be able to speak as the parent of a trans girl and how her life will be affected in each of these areas is a great opportunity. With my daughter watching and listening to everything happening around us, I feel even more pressure to push for changes and inclusion NOW!
If you can help me get there, I promise to represent the needs of the trans youth well. I still don't know why I was given this platform and visibility, but I'm determined to make the most of it to support the community that took us in when we were rejected by everyone else.
