United Action for Youth was established in 1970 and provides youth development and counseling programs to teens and families in Iowa City and the surrounding communities. UAY operates the Swaim Youth Center in downtown Iowa City, which includes a music recording studio, art studio, art gallery, performance space and offices for youth outreach and counseling. It also includes a crisis counseling for at-risk youth, a peer led health education program, and a youth and adult volunteer program. The counseling program assists youth experiencing a variety of issues, such as victims of crime and abuse, runaway youth, youth on the autism spectrum, and a range of mental health issues from depression to social anxiety. Assistance is provided to clients regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. UAY operates a program for pregnant and parenting teens that includes counseling and health services as well as a transitional living program, which provides housing and assistance to homeless youth. Programs are also provided in several surrounding rural communities.
