THE STORY:

Sandeep Prabhu wrote -

Did you know that the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide is actually 100 percent treatable but is driven by improper use of currently available treatment devices?

Any woman who delivers her baby outside a hospital or clinic will need to be transported to a better equipped health facility if she starts bleeding uncontrollaby after childbirth, which can result in a rapid and painful death. Since a large proportion of deliveries in the developing world still occur in such settings, these women need to be stabilized during transport.

In these low resource settings without advanced treatments, the non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) is applied to slow blood loss by applying pressure on the woman's abdomen and legs. The NASG, however, has been proven to work only 40-67% of the time since clinicians do not know how much pressure they are applying onto patients. This leads to a large variance in applied pressure, which can reduce the woman's chance of surviving.

At Saving Sara, my co-founder Alisha Manandhar and I have developed a pressure sensor device that allows providers to monitor and modulate the pressure applied by the NASG for the first time! We have completed a functional prototype of our pressure sensor and have filed for a patent. Your contributions and support will help us:

  1. Fund our application for FDA approval of our device
  2. Contract with manufacturers to mass produce our device for use in the developing world.

We are in talks with NGOs that work in our target areas. Support us in our quest to ensure that more mothers survive childbirth and fewer children lose their mothers so early and from a completely treatable condition. Learn more at www.savingsara.org

Sincerely,
