EVENT: Revlon LOVE IS ON 2016 Million Dollar Challenge

EVENT DATE: Sep 14, 2016

THE STORY:

UP will direct 100% of profits from this fundraiser to the transformation of a MEDICAL CLINIC in Eastern Cape, South Africa, and the construction of an ACADEMIC CENTER at Vusumzi School, a K – 7 school in the same township.

THE MEDICAL CLINIC

We all value the relationships we have or have had with our grandmothers, mothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, cousins, and friends, and we all must wonder where we would be without the incredibly influential women who taught us right from wrong and insisted that we strive for excellence, kindness, and empathy.

So, shouldn’t we use what they gave us to improve health education and access for women everywhere?

THE NOMATHAMSANQA CLINIC renovation will follow on the heels of our renovation of the Addo Clinic, a medical facility that serves residents from several different locations. The Nomathamsanqa Clinic, devoted only to the citizens of Nomathamsanqa, will offer care to several thousand residents who are in desperate need. The clinic design stems from extensive communication with local healthcare workers, who know full well about inadequate infrastructure, supplies, and numbers of staff members. Highly-skilled residents of Nomathamsanqa and its environs carry out the renovations, which adds a financial boost to the medical boost inherent in such an undertaking.

UP always couples its clinic renovations with door-to-door medical physicals. We team up with local staff and visit each resident in a particularly desperate neighborhood. During the home visits we carry out HIV/AIDS testing, tuberculosis and cholesterol screening, eye examinations, and eyewear fittings. The private interactions allow healthcare professionals to see those who might never make it to the clinic and to offer private education surrounding health maintenance and treatment.

In the afternoon, South African and UP medical staff hold workshops to educate the same residents about the essentials of healthcare, including cardiac health, drug and alcohol use, exercise, HIV/AIDS prevention, medical treatment, and the absolute importance of uniterrupted medicine regimens.

THE ACADEMIC CENTER

Our emphasis on education extends beyond the medical arena and into traditional academic settings, as well. So many of the children who have benefited from UP involvement in Nomathamsanqa over the years have expressed interest in the medical profession. So many yearn to be doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, emergency medical team personnel, and athletic trainers to ease the communitywide suffering.

A clear connection exists between those dreams and accessibility to excellent academic exposure. Toward that end, UP has embarked on a mission to build a brand new UNIVERSAL PROMISE ACADEMIC CENTER, which will include an unprecedented library, four new classrooms (one devoted to the arts), a dining area, a performing arts venue, and an afterschool tutoring space. The current building, built decades ago as a temporary structure, is a glaring symbol of the apartheid era. UP identifies this construction proposal as the most ambitious effort of its five-year renovation of Vusumzi Primary. The Academic Center will cap off our transformation of over 20 classrooms, and our provision of campus-wide electricity, a green clean water source, a state-of-the-art 31-station computer lab, a playground serving 100 kindergarteners, walkways, student incentive programs for those who exhibit strong academic, attendance, and citizenship records, a girls’ netball and a boys’ soccer development program – both accompanied by a life skills curriculum, and a live alarm system and perimeter fencing to secure the school. In this period of time, the school population has doubled, from barely 300 students to nearly 700.

UP holds in the highest regard the relationships we have forged and continue to forge with thousands of residents in Nomathamsanqa, South Africa. By listening and building trust, we learn their greatest hopes and struggles, many of which may be cured by access to proper education and proper healthcare.

As a result, UP incorporates a three-legged support system: traditional academic schooling, career training, and healthcare edification. All work in concert to secure financial independence, which perpetuates the cycle of empowerment.

UP has chosen to focus solely on Nomathamsanqa, because we believe that less is more. We are hopeful that our model of empowerment based on education will be worthy of replication. Our remarkable giving rate reflects the seriousness of our purpose, as does our track record of transformation.
