The Caribbean islands of St. Kitts-Nevis (SKN) face a unique assortment of environmental, economic and health problems stemming from their history, resource limitations, and geographic isolation. In order to address these issues, Standard Hydro will construct a pilot hydroponic shade house training facility in SKN, commercializing and scaling the research efforts of a local partner academic institution. This venture will increase the resilience of the local population to climate-based threats to their food source, with secondary impacts including poverty alleviation, health benefits, and agricultural self-sufficiency.
The Standard Hydro 20x40 foot hydroponic shade houses require less space than traditional agriculture, are closed systems that reuse water, and circulate nutrients using solar-powered pumps. We will provide a viable, low-cost, alternative supply of produce to buyers because we are able to grow and sell crops at a fraction of the cost of imported goods. By cutting down the time, labor intensity, and distance required to participate in agriculture, hydroponic shade houses intellectualize farming, negating the cultural aversion to field labor, and lessening the burden that Kittitians face in feeding themselves and their families. Ultimately, we seek to expand to the other Caribbean nations confronting similar socio-economic challenges.
