On 21 September, I will run in the "Run 10 Feed 10" race in New York City to raise funds for the emergency appeal launched by UNRWA for Gaza. My first school was run by UNRWA in Ramallah and my first UN job was with UNRWA in Gaza. Both Gaza and UNRWA have a special place in my heart. I hope to raise $10,000 for UNRWA's emergency appeal for Gaza. This is a challenge that I hope many friends and colleagues will help me achieve.
The recent Gaza crisis has caused immense human suffering and devastation in the Gaza Strip and had it not been for UNRWA and its heroic staff, the people of Gaza would have been in far worse straits. The numbers of civilian fatalities, injuries and displacements, and the destruction of homes and other civilian infrastructure, are unprecedented.
UNRWA has appealed for $295.4 million to be able to provide assistance through the end September 2014. As of 22 August, a quarter of the total Gaza population is internally displaced as a result of the hostilities. Approximately 300,000 are sheltered in 85 UNRWA schools, 45,000 are hosted in non-UNRWA premises, and at least 137,400 more are in other hosting arrangements.
According to UNRWA's website (www.unrwa.org), $30 gives counselling to a traumatised child; $40 feeds a person two daily meals for a week; $149 provides a family with mattresses and $1,080 feeds a family in Gaza for a month.
The $10,000 I hope to raise would feed ten families for a month. I hope you can help me do more than that.
