Since the development of United Nile Productions, We have devoted ourselves to Pan-African Media Education. We have spent our time discussing, researching, and developing creative curriculums in which we can examine and call attention to the issues surrounding African people not only in the conventional sense, but in examining Afro-Origins on every continent, and how those experiences connect to African Americans and people of color here in the U.S. We came together through our love of poetry, storytelling and a dedication to educating youth on their origins, identities, and pride. Fortunate to have had access to education, as well as a global perspective, we realized that as oppressed peoples everywhere are taught to focus on what separates them, we must counter act this in teaching that true strength comes in discovering what connects us. As writers, directors, and producers we formed United Nile to represent who we are, and to also represent our embracing of all peoples. As a production house, we focus on producing content that examines culture, love, race relations, socio-economic issues, and self-education. We are committed to establishing positive outlets of creative expression as a foundation for community outreach. We hope to continue to work diligently to educate and promote unity among brown and black peoples, knowing that the first step towards that is instilling self love and education within the younger generation. Our tool in doing this is through media..
Recently, United Nile, along with our sister organizations the W.H.A.T? (Washington Heights Arts Tantra), and WHAM (Washington Heights Arts Movement) has partnered with The Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center right here in our community of Washington Heights. The Shabazz Center, is 40% of the old Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was assassinated. The historical significance of this building, plays an extremely important role within our community. It provides a safe haven for our youth, an opportunity to involve parents, families, and artists by developing programming that stimulates minds, senses, and ideas. Bridging education with entertainment, we plan to cultivate positive identity and motivation in the hearts and minds of our people.
The first program United Nile hopes to begin towards the end of January is an after school program for youth 12-18. The program will be in three parts. To begin we will be reading the book "To Kill a Mockingbird", we will discuss the book, its themes, its emotions, and how it can be related to current events. We will watch the film, and we will then begin the second part of the programming. Working with the youth, we will begin to do scriptwriting workshops surrounding the book, to draw out the creativity of the youth. Developing a script that interprets "To Kill a Mockingbird" into a story that reflects the lives of this young generation and issues in our own neighborhood. We will then incorporate acting programming in with the script writing. We will prepare the youth to act out their play for the community at the Shabazz center on the anniversary of "To Kill a Mockingbird"'s publication.
We plan for this to simply be a portion of the programming we provide at the Shabazz center, but in assessing the needs of the community we find that after school programming is the first place we need to begin. United Nile's "To Kill A Mockingbird" program will be one of what we hope will grow to be many.
We are thankful for this opportunity, and hope that we will gain support for these projects. We hope to fundraise enough money to provide transportation for the youth, to also provide resources such as a copy of "To Kill A Mockingbird" for each child. Notebooks, costumes, arts materials and other things that would be necessary to provide a comprehensive program for the youth.
We hope that will take the time this christmas, to pledge as little or as much as you are able.
Thank you.
