#Up4school & Back2school with 100 children!
Organized by: Abongwa Victor
There are over 58 million children out of school today! 34 million of those are girls and over 15 million of those are children with disabilities or special needs, often marginalized and deprived access to an inalienable human right, the right to education! Despite several promises made by world leaders to ensure that every child is in school by October 2015, the clock is ticking and that goal seems to be far fetched. Do we depend on them or take matters into our hands? Well Big Steps is poised at acting now than waiting! Taking matters into our hands and prioritizing the education of as many children as we possibly can!
Big Steps Outreach Network (BONET), a youth led organization in Cameroon working for and with young people since its founding has worked tirelessly in the face of a myriad of obstacles to address issues of marginalization, inequality, HIV/AIDS and other challenges facing young people with disabilities, orphans and vulnerable children (OVC's), socially excluded people (SEP), sexual minorities and those living with HIV/AIDS providing them with opportunities to accessing quality and holistic education. This work mixes with our preventative risk-reduction strategies in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Substance Abuse because we believe it is essential to equip young people to tackle the 21st Century aptly. We do our work through a combination of volunteering our time, material and financial support in educating and creating opportunities for them ,enabling them access quality education in safe, affordable, acessible and fun ways!
Early in 2013 we started our pilot phase of providing free computer lessons to underprivileged children in rural areas and villages and in one of these in 2014, we conneted the village and the beneficiaries to the world by conecting the first ever internet connection at the centre and the village and today over 80 children from 5 primary schools are provided with both soft-skills and skills which can form the base of an empowering entrepreneurial drive.
However we want to do more...! Why you may ask?
Well because there is so much more to be done and we are determined to make a mark especially as the countdown to the October 2015 deadline approaches!
But...We can't do it alone and this is where we need your help!
Sad to say, but the facts from our sources reveals that about one month gone into the 2014/2015 academic year, there are still hundreds of OVCs among other pupils and students with no didactic materials to commence their studies despite their passion for quality education. Big Steps can’t resist but to set up this emergency campaign to send back 100 school children from five primary schools In Mendakwe, a rural area where one of our computer labs is setup. We want to equip, and provide 100 children in dyer need of didactic materials including school fees, books(exercise and text books) uniforms pens and pencils, sandals to go back to school as other children already are!
There has been an overwhelming demand from community members and teachers asking us to help following the success of other projectswe have implemented but... we are just a budding organization with little other than our skills and time to vilunteer and so we need your help to make this happen!
Your Donations will go to help send 100 children (especially OVCs) to school who otherwise would not be able to. we have raised some money, but its just isn't enough to send back all those who look upon us to make this school year a success for them. Some are being chased out of class already while their friends stay back to follow lessons but we can change that! With your generous donation of
- $10 we will buy 6 exercise books, pens, pencils and ruler for one kid
- $15 we will buy One textbook 6 exercise books, pens pencils and rulers for one child
- $25 we will buy 2 text books, 6 exercise books, pens ,pencils & ruler for one child
