THE STORY:

To provide vests for our K-9 officers:

In September, 10-year-old Allison Henry from Holyoke, Mass., asked for donations for her birthday instead of presents. She raised $1,000 for a local K-9 named Ryker to get a vest.  I read this article online and wanted to find out more about an organization that raises money for bullet proof vests for K9 units across the US called Vested Interest in K9s.  I didn’t think much more about it until I was at a local community day which was attended by one of our local K9 units.

It was as though fate had drawn me to the article in the first place, and then I had an opportunity to meet one of our local K9 units.

I learnt that the two K9 officers, Max and Axel serving the Duncan, SC area do not have bullet proof vests.  I decided that if a 10 year old could raise money for a vest, there should be no reason why can’t raise money for two vests for the Duncan police Department.

All officers whether they are 2 legged or 4 legged should be issued safety vests.  Enlisting police dogs is a common practice in police departments across the U.S., they are often the first officers to handle difficult situations, but bullet- proof canine vests are not part of departments’ regular budgets. Police department’s often can’t find the money to vest their canine officers.

With your help, we can raise the money to vest these very special officers.

My immediate goal is to raise the $1,900, which is the cost for 2 vests. I’m sure with your help and generosity, we can make this happen! A bullet and stab protective vest will make a world of difference for the K9 officers. If I exceed my goal... that would be wonderful as there are many more K9s in the Upstate who need our help and additional funds will go toward making their vests a reality.

Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. is a 501c(3) non-profit fundraising organization dedicated to providing bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement K-9′s throughout the United States.
