What We Do:
Our program, Youth Plots, partners with local youth organizations in the community with a specific emphasis on our city's vulnerable youth.
Youth Plots trains young people in urban farming techniques through a hands on experience in the gardens. Our Youth Plots participants learn about plant botany, garden construction, healthy food choices and much more!
Seedscapes is a new training initiative collaboration between Urbanstead and Cloud 9 Rooftop Farm with support from our many community partners. Seedscapes will operate alongside Urbanstead’s Youth Plots for younger students and Cloud 9’s adult workshops series to provide intergenerational learning, leadership, and teaching opportunities. Together we seek to support the development of community-driven urban farm projects that support food justice, entrepreneurship, stewardship of urban ecosystems and community cohesion.
The Seedscapes Program works with young adults, ages 16-21 to provide a critical career skill-building experience by building food producing spaces in the ground, on rooftops and in aquaponics systems throughout the city for clients. Seedscapes’ trainees receive extensive training in urban agriculture techniques while developing valuable entrepreneurial and employment skills in team collaboration, project planning, organization, budgeting, business planning, customer service, time management, networking and more. This initiative strengthens the future of our neighborhoods and provides increased access to local fresh food grown by the community for the community.
Urbanstead Farm Stand
From June through November, we operate a weekly youth operated Farm Stand to sell our freshly grown produce, organically grown plants and value added products!
Youth working at the Urbanstead Farm Stand learn how to operate a business through product staging, customer service, bookkeeping, accounting, and sales skills while providing fresh food options to their community. Unsold produce is donated to the community
