Fund the Farm 2014!
Organized by: S. Leah Bowden
This is a creative sustainability and community building project three years in the making. At our current location in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego we produce organic fruits and vegetables, herbs, meat, eggs, chocolates and custom apparel. There is always more on the horizon! And that's why we're fundraising; it's time to take our work to the next level through the purchase and development of a multi-acre property in San Diego.
Our project has been enabled by all kinds of collaborative efforts, from short term work-trades to intense and long term partnerships. Amanda Chisholm, Apryl Bailey, Francis Murchison, Leah Bowden and Philip Skaller currently live at the farm and oversee all of its operations.
So many people have contributed to the farm’s development through their ideas, hard work and economic support. But after three years at a rented property with a 1/4 acre garden area, the next step is to purchase land. This way we can move our efforts onto a larger space where we will have full ownership. This will greatly expand the potential of what we do, including a higher volume of organic produce, more people involved and a broader reach for the project. We also plan to take the community education components of our work to the next level.
We have a real estate professional on board (Scott) who is looking at properties. He's in communication with the seller of a property of particular interest and it's likely that we'll put a bid in soon. Scott is helping us understand the legal and financial side of what we're trying to do, which is helpful because it's very complicated!
At the time of this writing the members of our collective have saved up about $10,000 for the land fund... not a bad start! Our goal is to raise an additional $10,000 online which will go directly toward the purchase of a suitable piece of land. Help us to reach our goal today :-)
