BENEFITING: Urban Impact
ORGANIZER: Urban Impact
EVENT: 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon
EVENT DATE: May 06, 2018
Since 2013, I have been running a race in the Pittsburgh Marathon. Last year was my first year however to support and run for Urban Impact, a charity that is doing amazing work for Christ by positively impacting urban youth. We had a team of over 120 runners across the 5k, Marathon Relay, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon who raised over $47,000 for the foundation. I ran the half-marathon in May 2017 and am hoping to complete both the 5k and the full marathon this coming year (May 2018).
The Urban Impact Foundation began as an outreach ministry of the Allegheny Center Alliance Church (of which I was member when living in Pittsburgh). This Christian community development organization provides safe and faith-based after school programs for at-risk children, youth, and their families. In nearly two decades they have impacted thousands of children and youth from the North Side of Pittsburgh and over 50,000 young people nationally through their various ministries and programs. They offer programs in the Arts, Education, Athletics, and Options (helps students make the transition from high school). Last fiscal year, with the help of 400 volunteers, Urban Impact reached 1,750 youth, served 32,300 meals, retained between 700 and 900 core students and saw all enrolled Options students graduate from high school!
The children in the Urban Impact Choir specifically blessed me while they sang during church services, special events, and even along the marathon course. Many of my friends have also volunteered as teachers, coaches, and mentors to these young people and I have loved hearing their touching stories.
I would be very grateful for any donation, large or small, that would support Urban Impact and bring me closer to my fundraising goal of $800!
