United South End Settlements (USES) is a pioneering multi-service organization that provides holistic and comprehensive services and programs to over 3,000 people annually. USES works to build a strong community by improving the education, health, safety and economic security of all residents in Boston’s historic South End/Lower Roxbury neighborhood. Our roots in this community run deep. USES was founded in 1891, as the first settlement house in Boston when members of the community committed to ensuring all residents had what they needed to move forward. This was the beginning of the early social justice movement. Today, USES is fulfilling its a commitment to equality and opportunity through our innovative work.
For generations, the South End and Lower Roxbury community has been home to families of all backgrounds, a refuge for the city’s artistic soul, and at the forefront of opening doors for residents and guests regardless of their sexual orientation, race, class, class or religion. Today, we have great disparity in our community, with 30% of households and 36% of children living below the poverty line. Our holistic, multi-generational programming supports family members at every stage of life, infant to senior citizen. Our team prepare young children and families for kindergarten, provide academic and arts enrichment programming, inspire youth to broaden their horizons at an overnight summer camp in New Hampshire, equip adults with the skills and resources needed to achieve economic stability, and allow seniors to live enriched lives in the comfort of their own homes. Using this model, we are able to meet students where they are at and create a plan to move the whole family out of poverty and towards economic self-sufficiency.
United South End Settlements is proud to be an official non-profit partner with John Hancock for the 2016 Boston Marathon.
