THE STORY:

USO Alaska wrote -

Army veteran and combat wounded warrior Josh Revak is living proof that miracles can happen, with a lot of determination, sweat, healing music, and support from good, caring people.

In 2006, Josh and fellow soldier Terry Lisk found themselves caught in the middle of an enemy mortar attack while serving in Ramadi, Iraq. Terry, standing alongside Josh, was fatally wounded. Josh was hit with heavy shrapnel in both legs, resulting in an ankle fusion and a long road of rehabilitation. Josh's wife was 9 months pregnant, in labor, while he was in surgery as doctors worked to save his leg.

After 9 years recovering as a "limb salvage" patient, Josh found both the will and the way to achieve his long-time goal to run in The Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota on June 18. And now, he's using the opportunity to give back to the USO. "The USO was there helping to take care of me right after it happened, recalls Josh of his time at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and USO Landstuhl Warrior Center in  Germany. "If I can raise money around this cause to benefit the USO, that's what I want to do."

But that's not all that Josh Revak has to offer. Josh has personally benefited from and shares the healing power of music with fellow service members recovering from visible and invisible combat wounds.

Inspired by his need for grieving and closure around the loss of a highly respected member of his unit, Josh wrote the song "Alaska," named for a discussion he had with Sgt. Timothy Hayslett just one day before this natural-born leader was killed while on patrol in Bagdhad, Iraq. Sgt. Hayslett was only days away from his new assignment to Fort Wainwright, in Fairbanks, Alaska. Josh has performed this and many other original songs for fellow service members to provide them with a healthy outlet for their grieving process, as loss is something they have become all too familiar with throughout their military careers.

Now serving himself in Alaska as a military and veterans aide for U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan,  Josh, his wife and their two children continue to inspire service members and military couples coping with the many faces of loss and unique challenges experienced by our military community.

Proceeds benefitting the USO will support USO Alaska's outreach and support efforts for active duty, National Guard and Reservists and their families military serving throughout the state.

Thank you for pledging to support Josh Revak's inspiring first marathon and USO Alaska. To learn more about Josh Revak, visit his site at http://www.joshrevak.com. To learn more about USO Alaska, visit http://www.uso.org/alaska.
