BENEFITING: LOUISIANA NAVAL WAR MEMORIAL COM
Day One was fully funded. Now, let's take care of Day Two.
The USS KIDD (DD-661) is a Fletcher-class destroyer that served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War. She is a National Historic Landmark but receives neither state nor federal funding. The Navy no longer funds her. Funding comes from admissions, souvenir sales, grants, and donations.
The KIDD is in the midst of a financial crisis. There are efforts underway to raise some serious dollars, but as with all things, those efforts will take time to bear fruit. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina forced us to shut down operations for a month. We are working hard to ensure that does not happen again.
At present, it costs approximately $1,700 per day to operate, restore, preserve, and maintain the ship, the museum building, and the surrounding grounds. "Run The Ship for a Day" was my effort to raise at least $1,700 (the amount needed to keep the doors/gangway open for one and only one day). Of course, more is needed, but I am focusing on one day at a time.
The KIDD serves as an educational experience for children and adults of all ages through school tours, Overnight camping experiences, seminars/lectures, etc. She also serves as a memorial honoring veterans who have served or are currently serving our country. We have some really exciting projects ahead of us planned aboard ship and ashore at the museum. But we need help and time to get there.
Please help. Thank you.
P.S. Don't feel comfortable donating online? You can also phone the museum's Gift Shop at 225-342-1942, x. 16. Let the cashier know that you wish to donate to the "Run The Ship for a Day" fundraiser. They can run a credit card transaction for you. Or, if you prefer, you can mail a check made out to "USS KIDD" to:
