We would like to build a community garden at our rural, low-income elementary school. We are surrounded by fields, but the local food banks are full of processed foods and the grocery stores do not have high-quality, local, organic produce available. Obesity is everywhere. Establishing a community garden would be an excellent opportunity for us to educate our students about where food comes from, how they can grow enough to nourish themselves in an economical manner, and how fresh, whole foods are prepared. It will be a very empowering process that has the ability to change their lives forever. They will learn the necessary skills to become healthy, happy adults who are in control of their own nutrition.
