THE STORY:

Nourish International wrote -

Chapter: University of Oregon and University of Washinton

Partner Organization: Rural Health Care Foundation-Uganda (RHCF)

Project Description:

The University of Oregon and University of Washington chapters are working with Rural Health Care Foundation-Uganda to invest in the construction of sanitation facilities at a school to reduce the prevalence of waterborne illnesses in the target village, promote female empowerment and education, as well as increase general awareness about proper water sanitation and hygeine practices.

Project Details:

In August 2014, UW implemented a water hygiene and sanitation project in one of the remote areas in Mubende Kiyuni subcounty and discovered that many communities in the area use unsafe water from local ponds. In summer 2014, they protected two water sources in these communities and found that the behaviors of these communities changed dramatically. The children were able to attend school because they no longer suffered from waterborne diseases. Farming also improved because time previously used to take sick children to the hospital was now used to tend the farms.

With this year's project, we hope to improve sanitation structures in a rural school, serving more than 600 pupils, to help ensure continued female enrollment past puberty. In many rural schools, female enrollment drops by 50% once girls reach puberty due to lack of proper sanitation structures that create privacy. In addition, we will be working with four other schools to conduct sanitation and hygiene education seminars, contributing to the overall health of the community.

Partner Background:

In 1998, cousins Walusimbi Willy and Doctor Dickson had the idea to start an organization that focused on helping the rural villages of the Mubende District. The high rate of HIV/AIDS in the region resulted in the death of many parents in the community, leaving numerous children to support themselves. The pain they felt for these kids and a passion to help them took root in their hearts. The inspiration from the orphans, surviving on their own at very young ages, sparked the initial planning for the HIV/AIDS program and Rural Mama Children’s Home.

As a non-governmental organization, RHCF has an outstanding portfolio of programs in clean water, hygiene and sanitation practices, education for the most disadvantaged people, and innovative care of infants and children through improving their nutrition.
