"We are all the nationals of earth , instead of walls we need roads and bridges between us . UWC education is the connecting bridge, thus we put our bits of efforts together to expand it . Refugees did not choose to be refugees, they had to run for their lives to our door steps , and if we don't open the door the concept of love and care will fade away .Who knows whose turn is tomorrow?.................. love & regards" --Davood Mohseni, '73-'75
“It is our firm conviction that the indiscriminate exclusion of refugees and nationals of certain countries will be counterproductive and potentially fuel further conflict.” -- From the UWC International statement on the first Executive Ban.
1) Crowdfund to protect vulnerable refugee students from changing U.S. immigration policies. Our refugee students' lives will remain precarious for some time. Let us come together to help protect these students who have already been through so much. Your donations will be held in a special fund by UWC International and used to support refugee students in need, for example, emergency travel funds for unforeseen delays, or medical expenses in transit. This money will be available to UWC-IO to use at their discretion. Any money left over when the current crisis is over will go to the UWC-IO Refugee Initiative.
Using the CrowdRise platform, 97% of the money you give will go to the UWC International's Refugee Scholarship Fund via UWC-USA. We are asking for donations of $25 or more. American contributions are tax-deductible -- you will get an appropriate receipt from CrowdRise.
2) Connect with other UWC alumni. When I discovered an ACer living 6 doors away from me in Berkeley, I realized that we must have passed a hundred times in the street without knowing it. How often does this happen? London Heathrow, in downtown Oslo? So I had produced UWC luggage stickers and car windscreen clings to catch the eye of other alumni and prompt wonderful chance meetings. Everyone contributing to this crowdfunder will receive thank-yous in the form of these UWC stickers and clings. These are high-quality and should survive years of travel. I can't guarantee you'll get your surprise alumni friendship. But the chances will improve -- the more stickers that go out. N.B. Stickers may take up to six weeks to arrive because your contact info has to go through UWC-USA on a monthly basis. If you need one earlier, please contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org with "donor" in the subject field.
Thank you! And let us hope that our stickers help us to find each other in the days to come. We need each other more than ever. As we did as UWC students -- let's pull together! We will keep you up to date. Love to you all.
Join in -- if this takes off I would love to have team members all over the world to help mail out stickers and save on postage. Please e-mail me on email@example.com if you would be willing to help. Thank you!
AND -- please put your name, full address and e-mail in the "comments" field so we can find you! Thank you! We will not pass this information on to anyone outside the UWC fundraising team.
Support globally -- connect locally!
