First Community Fundraiser event!
January 06, 2017
The UWC NY Board will be setting some larger community events (e.g. Speaker series) but we need YOUR participation to make this campaign a success:
Invite your friends to dinner; set up a board game night; have a party and charge for cocktails; set up a house concert; set up an art show! Any event that you can do to bring your network of people together will be a great event to ask them to contribute towards a refugee scholarship. 2016 sucked; let's make 2017 better through our own actions and in this new era of closed hearts and closed minds; let's bring a talented, deserving refugee student to the US!
To join Team UWC NYC and set up your own mini-fundraiser, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ambitious scholarship programme for outstanding refugee teenagers launched by UWC and BRC
United World Colleges (UWC), in partnership with the non-profit organisation Blue Rose Compass (BRC), has pledged to award UWC college scholarships to refugees from Syria and other priority conflict regions. Initially, ten scholarships will be awarded in 2016. This will be expanded up to 100 scholarships in subsequent years – providing refugees from the Middle East and other parts of the world with a unique opportunity to access UWC’s world-class transformational education programmes. UWC and BRC wish to establish a consortium of donors and supporters to provide a life changing education for these young people every year.
Blue Rose Compass visits countries hosting refugees to identify gifted young people, and connects them with educational opportunities in world-leading colleges and universities, including help with language, testing, visas, travel, living expenses and finding a job on graduation. In return, scholars commit to use their education to benefit their regions of origin.
Jens Walterman, Executive Director of UWC International said: “We greatly welcome this partnership with BRC. Together we will find young people whose experience of conflict gives them the desire and drive to bring about positive change in their lives and the lives of others. UWC has a unique role to play in addressing global challenges by demonstrating the power of education to unite diverse groups of people. The young people we select will meet others from all over the world, forming a unique global cohort. Together they will learn not only that they can excel in any field they choose, but also that they can become community leaders and help to find solutions to some of the world’s most intractable problems.”
