Empower youth in Kibera

Investing in the youth of Kibera, Kenya through education, life skills training, talent development, and economic empowerment

Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya, can be a dangerous place. Kibera residents live on one square mile of land with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and electricity.  The costs of education are unaffordable for many families and formal job opportunties are scarce. Hopelessness and Kibera seem to go hand-in-hand — until you actually spend time there, and meet the many bright and resourceful people who make it such a dynamic community.

Uweza, which is Kiswahili for ability, focuses largely on working with youth, as nearly half of Kibera’s population is under the age of 15, and an estimated 75% of Kenya’s population is under the age of 25. Current Uweza projects invest in developing the inherent abilities and talents of Kibera's youth and are led by residents of Kibera who are leaders in their community.

These projects include:

- Educational scholarships for primary and secondary school
- Soccer academy and youth soccer league
- After-school tutoring
- Journalism, dance, and art clubs
- Golden Girls Power (a girls' empowerment club)
- Life skills trainings (topics have included choosing a career, healing from past trauma, relationships, and reproductive health)

Uweza also runs its own community center in the heart of Kibera, providing a safe space for youth to study, play, develop their talents, and learn valuable life skills.
