Holiday Greetings from Beyond the Horizon

Thank you for being open minded, compassionate, and generous
Thank you for being you and being part of our journey to the world beyond the horizon

We have raised over $62K and implemented various projects to support Masai children's education in Kenya in 2014. There are certainly lots of old fashioned romantics around…

Happy holidays and have an exciting new year!

We made it, because of you! …
We made it, because of you!

After nearly one year of hard work, from fundraising, volunteer recruitment, to laying the bricks one piece at a time, and painting the entire building, we have completed the cafeteria at Oloosnion primary school in Kenya. 16 of us traveled there for the final painting job and opening celebration earlier this month. There were 1,640 people shown up at the opening, including 600 students, teachers, parents, villagers from the local Masai community and local government officials. We fed them all. Check out our album http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0AaNmzRi1ZsWrCuA

Thank you so much for believing in and supporting our project. We couldn't do this without you.

In addition to the cafeteria, we also initiated a few ongoing projects:
- donated 150 copies of books to set up a school library
- set up a "Flash Lab", a computer lab using recycled equipment and running on flash drives for low set up and maintenance cost
- announced SIS (Stay in School) scholarship to sponsor 10 Masai girls to finish primary education. To be a SIS sponsor, please go to https://www.crowdrise.com/SISSponsorship/fundraiser/meizhang. To learn more about the life story of each girl we support, please contact me by replying this email.

I am also very excited to inform you that we are forming "Beyond the Horizon", a not-for profit organization for professionals in the technology industry who are adventurous and commit to go beyond the horizon to help the remote communities. Our next major project is to build a secondary school in the same area. If you are interested in the future projects and tours, please reply this email to subscribe our monthly newsletter. Or like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Come-with-me-to-Africa/531617160250013. Beyond the Horizon website will be launched soon.

This has been an incredible journey and I am honored to have you company. There are always places beyond the horizon waiting for us to explore.

Cheers!

Project Update from Kenya

Hello all,

While we are all getting ready for summer, I just want to provide you a quick update on our project in Kenya. Since we left in February, other volunteers and local crews have been continuously working on the construction of the cafeteria. Now the plastering is done inside and out! It will take a couple of months to dry and in time for us to go back to paint in Sept.
Please go to this link to see the photos from earlier this week. (http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0AaNmzRi1ZsWrCmg&emid=shareprintviewer&linkid=link5&cid=EM_sharview)
Or go to our Facebook page to see how it all comes together from the beginning. (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Come-with-me-to-Africa/531617160250013)

The team is working with the school and AMS to design a mural for the cafeteria. We are also working on setting up a library and a make-shift computer lab for the school!

It was you made all these possible. Your support inspires everyday to keep this going.

Thank you,
Mei

Project Update: Oloonsion primary school, Kenya

Hello All,
We have made some significant progress on the construction project at Oloonsinon primary school this past week. Another volunteer group from California arrived and continued from what we left in Feb. Now, the roof of the building is up and most of the dinning hall furnitures have been made. Please go to our Facebook page for photos
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Come-with-me-to-Africa/531617160250013

We have decided to go back in Sept to finish up the project and participate the opening ceremony of the cafeteria. I will keep you posted upon the key milestone of the project.

I am very excited about every progress on the project. I am even more gracious to see your contribution having this far reaching and real impact to a remote community. Thank you for "make it happen" with us!

Hello all, We are back fro…
Hello all,

We are back from Kenya, safe and sound! Thank you so much for your support and generosity!
27 of us traveled to Kenya earlier this month. We made significant progress on the construction project at Oloosinon primary school. The foundation and all walls are completed. The window and door frames are installed. This 80x30 feet dining hall is going to be the largest single indoor space in the entire county. It will also be used as auditorium for school and community events.
Another volunteer group from southern California will continue the construction in March. We expect to put up the roof and complete exterior of the walls next.
The final painting and opening ceremony will be in the fall. We are organizing a small group of volunteers to travel back.

All of us had great time during this trip. In addition to the construction work, we participated school events, sports, volunteered at a full time clinic, and visited Masai village and local market. Some of us extended the stay for Safaris and hiking. Our host AMS was nothing but excellent. It is an extraordinary that we will all treasure for years to come.

Please check out some of the pictures from this trip

We are hosting "Out of Africa: Welcome back and sharing" happy hour on March 6, 4-6 pm, at Building 7:1 Quincy 1, NetApp. This is an open house event. We will provide update on the project, share stories on the trip, and pay our gratitude to NetApp community. Wine will be served. Please come join us!

27 of us, including 18 NetApp employees and their family and friends, will be in Kenya to participate the construction of the school facility next week. We will report back upon our return.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
