THE STORY:

Just before holiday season, a friend (who is actually more like family) was preparing for her surgery. A single mother of a magnificent and energetic little boy, Elijah, and a rock for her family was about to face her greatest life hurdle -- breast cancer. And despite popular opinion about ObamaCare, she was struggling to secure money for her surgery. I was heartbroken for her. Nowadays, it seems that so many of us are touched by this disease. After listening to her story and realizing that she still needed $1200 to guarantee that the reconstructive surgeon would be in the surgery with her, I felt compelled to do something more. So I took to social media as well as made her story a focus of my video series (on Vimeo). Miracles happen everyday and people are far more caring than we are led to believe. She had her surgery, she is cancer-free and recovering; however, the medical bills and subsequent treatment to ensure that the cancer does not return are still costly and adding up. So at the end of next year, we named her the recipient of the 2016 DunDun Award. The DunDun Award is named for the only mother I have every truly known. She believed that 'everyone needs a little help' from time to time. Since her crossover in December 2009, I have made it my personal commitment to reach out to those who need a little help. Venesha will be our third recipient of the award. Our first two recipients: Mother Earth Coffee (2009)(small business) and Passion for Paws (2013)(Non-Profit to benefit canines & felines). Join me in helping this dynamic young woman and her beautiful son in their victory over breast cancer. Thank you for reading. Nuff Respect & Much Love! -- Cleo
