My name is Daniel Park and it is my first year in the Venice High School Sports Medicine Team. Throughout the semester, i have learned how to tape and treat the athletes constantly getting injured at our school. Through this progra, it helped me better intract with athletes.
We are the only sports medicine program in Los Angeles Unified School District and the only national honors society on the Venice High School campus. Our student athletic trainers provide excellent care to the student-athletes,both on and off the field. We also participate annually in California, Cal-HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and Washington State sports medicine competitions.
Our ATC Kirsten Farrell is phenomenal! Despite being paid part-time both as a teacher and an athletic trainer for our school, she works full time for each. She continues to guide this well respected program year after year for both student-athletes and especially, the student athletic trainers. We could not do without her as her dedication and willingness to cover expenses for our supplies, competitions and trips. Each year competition fees for the California, Washington and Cal HOSA competitions approach $1200 per student. Many of our students come from socio economically disadvantaged homes or single parent homes and have never had the opportunity to travel outside the Los Angeles area.
The Venice High School Sports Medicine Team is not funded by the school or the district. All of our supplies, trips, and fees are covered by smaller scale fundraisers and private donations. The plan for this fundraiser is to provide a bedrock of money to allow our program to operate, flourish and grow in the coming years.
Please note that the Gondolier Booster Club is the designated 501(c)(3) organization on our campus that manages the Venice High School Sports Medicine Club's funds.
