I joined the Sports Medicine Team as a junior, and I am now a senior. These past two years have opened my eyes to the opportunities that I have in the medical field, tested my patience, increased my maturity, and made me a well-rounded individual.
I was hesitant to join the team back in 2013, but in retrospect, I have discovered that it's one of the best decisions that I have made in the entirety of my high school career. I was worried about the time commitment and the amount that we would have to be learning, but I soon figured out that Kirsten makes it a manageable and pleasant experience for everyone on the team.
We learn steadily throughout the year, and with what we learn we go to in-state and out-of-state competitions in March and April. I participated in the St. Francis and the Washington State competitions last year as a "rookie" on the team. I learned so much from what I studied through Kirsten's guidance, and I could not have been more proud of the team and myself when the competitions were through.
Speaking of the team, we can all trust each other to do what's right and take responsibility. Kirsten has instilled critical values in me and my teammates, which include communication, responsibility, and integrity. I believe that because of Kirsten, everyone on the Sports Medicine Team comes out of the program as a better person.
Kirsten does a lot for the team that shows that she really cares about us, but sometimes it can be a burden for her to pick up the slack. Kirsten donates thousands of dollars to the team for competitions and supplies, while only getting paid as a part-time teacher and a part-time athletic trainer. Oh, and did I mention… Kirsten works full-time!? She is always happy to help us succeed in our skills, and is always happy to assist the student-athletes in any way that she can, but in order for her to do that, we need your help. All fundraising money goes towards the Sports Medicine Team’s competition, supplies, and facilities so that we can be better prepared for our future careers and so that our student-athletes at Venice High School are always cared for in the best way possible. Anything helps, and on behalf of the team, I hope that you take an interest in our wonderful program. Go Gondos!
