I feel honored to run my first Chicago Marathon this year for myself and for the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women's Network “Run Domestic Violence Out of Town" team. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work directly with support and advocacy for families affected by domestic violence in the last four years. Being an advocate for victims and promoting healthy families has become a mission and passion for me and has been a part of so much positive growth in my life.
About 70 percent of women world wide experience violence in their lifetime and it affects not only women but children and men and those witnessing and supporting as friends and loved ones. Domestic violence is an issue that transcends age, race and socioeconomic boundaries and yet in our day and age it is vaguely discussed and acknowledged. Create awareness and hope with me! Support me in my goal of raising $1000 for the many organizations in Chicago that provide services to victims and survivors of domestic violence. Together we can put an end to the cycle of violence and foster healthier families and communities.
A little about the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network:
The Coalition is an unprecedented collaboration representing diverse populations across Chicago. Its member agencies are located in neighborhoods throughout the city and suburbs and serve communities representing all races, ethnicities, and religions. As Coalition member Ava Newbart, Director of Development at Shalva, states, “domestic violence doesn’t discriminate: it’s an equal-opportunity destroyer of families throughout Chicago. It doesn’t matter if you’re Hispanic, Asian, Jewish, or Arabic, or whether you are rich or poor. We embrace our diversity and stand together because nobody should be afraid in their own home. Domestic violence is NOT OK.”
