The Vertical Drop Challenge is a skiing and snowboarding event held at Mt. Rose Ski Resort that benefits The Wildland Firefighter Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and assists injured firefighters and their families. There will be an after party at Jub Jub's Thirst Parlor in midtown Reno following the fun on the mountain with live music and a raffle.
Traditionally, the Challenge has been to see which individual or group can complete the most runs down the Slide side of Mt. Rose in four hours. This amounts to bombing down 1,800 vertical feet over and over again for four hours straight. As if that wasn't hard enough, tailgating beckons in the parking lot before, during and after the event, with grills going, music playing, and ice cold refreshments on tap - all of which threaten to draw you in and steal a few precious runs here and there.
To make it even more of a challenge this year, there's going to be more to it than that. Everyone participating will be able to get sponsored on this website to increase their chances of winning. The winning individual or group competing in The Vertical Drop Challenge will be calculated by taking the number of runs they complete on the mountain and multiplying it by the dollar amount they raise here. So if a member or group finishes 30 runs and raises $100, their score would be 3,000 points. Prizes will be awarded to the three highest scoring individuals. Groups are competing for the trophy and all the pride that comes with it.
How to sign up to compete:
Please accept the challenge to compete individually or as a group by clicking the gray "fundraise for this campaign" button. By doing so you will "join the team" to fundraise and become a member of the Vertical Drop Challenge. You will then be able to create a profile for yourself or your group to get sponsored and track how much you are raising for The Wildland Firefighter Foundation. Then see how many runs you can do on March 28th at Mt. Rose Ski Resort.
Groups must consist of 3 to 5 people and each run must be completed together. Lift tickets for each person competing cost $75. They will be available the day of the event (cash or check). Proceeds from lift tickets go directly to The Wildland Firefighter Foundation and will also count towards your group or individual dollar amount raised and point total. When you make your group profile, simply enter your group name instead of your first and last name.
How to donate and sponsor:
You can sponsor a member by clicking the orange "donate to this fundraiser" button. Then choose which member you would like your donation to support. Then show up on the Slide side of Mt. Rose on March 28 to cheer on your favorite.
Don't forget about the after party at Jub Jub's Thirst Parlor in midtown Reno following the Challenge. There will be live music and a raffle.
Thank you all for supporting The Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
