Safe, Healthy Housing for Veterans!
March 15, 2016
BENEFITING: NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania
EVENT DATE: Jun 11, 2016
NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania works year-round to preserve and promote homeownership and to build better neighborhoods and safer shelter for all. Among the heartbreaking stories we regularly encounter are those involving homeless veterans or veterans whose housing is unsafe, unstable or inadequate. If you can make even a small donation to this campaign, you can provide a better home for a local veteran.
Three veterans from St. Francis Commons in downtown Scranton would love the opportunity to Go Over The Edge with their clinical director, Dominic Toraldo, who also is raising money to to rappel on behalf of veterans. Dominic notes that 1 in 5 homeless individuals in our communities today are veterans and that 22 veterans take their lives daily. When he and the people he serves daily make this rappel, they will be doing so to raise awareness about this national and local problem.
These rappels will take place during the national celebration of NeighborWorks Week, a week set aside each summer in which NeighborWorks America and its network of local organizations mobilize tens of thousands of volunteers, businesspeople, neighbors, friends, and local and national elected and civic leaders in a week of neighborhood change and awareness.
Last year, across the country, network members rehabbed and repaired homes, painted and landscaped properties, conducted neighborhood tours, recognized successful partnerships, and hosted events that educated, trained and informed families and communities. This year, on June 10 and 11, NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania hopes especially to call attention to the problem of veteran homelessness during this special week.
Any money you donate to this campaign not only helps give homeless veterans the adventure of a lifetime, after they put their lives on the line in national service, but goes directly back into the local home-repair projects NeighborWorks will offer to veterans this summer.
