Hello -- my name is Stephen Michaelson and I am a Navy veteran, current Coast Guard volunteer, and author of the Veteran's Creed.
I am seeking donations to underwrite the cost of vet-to-vet peer support training from the Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) of Chicago.
Mental illness, in the form of moderate to severe depression, is something I have dealt with for most of my adult life. Even while helping others over the years -- as a peace officer, firefighter/EMT, military member, and disaster relief worker -- my own inner pain was not far away.
However, since 2011, with the help of Edward Hines VA Hospital in Chicago, I have overcome it, and I am now ready to pay it forward.
Approximately 22 veterans per day take their own lives, and the rate is especially high for male veterans under the age of 30-35. I will use my insights and experience to help other veterans who need a hand up with their own mental health.
When I complete this program, I will be both trained and equipped to help my brother and sister vets stand down from a particular kind of pain and stigma that only another veteran can fully understand.
I wrote the Veteran's Creed as therapy for myself, and as an affirmation of the lives of all veterans, past and present. Please help me to help them.
Thanks in advance for your donations, support, and shares.
